Oh, no. I didn't update my sig/profile. That's a spankin' new 2020 truck. I no longer have the 14DBS, neither.

Well, sold the 16TBS to a friend last Saturday, signed the papers for a new old stock 2019 Lance 1985 on Monday, secured financing on Wednesday and proceeded to find out my TV needs transmission work to the tune of $4k on Thursday. And to make matters worse, the part is on about a 2 week backorder aaaaaand we're supposed to go camping in the U.P. with friends in precisely 2 weeks. Grrrr. Will the part get here early? Will I have to cancel our trip? Will we go but hotel it with a brand new camper sitting at home? Will we take our chances and tow 1200 miles with a front differential that is whining? Not bad yet but....Will I find a truck to rent or borrow? I think those are all my options. Stay tuned....

The VW has both trans and diff problems or are those just 2 ways of saying the same thing?  I hope the part comes in!  If you can get the part number don't hesitate to do some searching on your own.

Differential. Apparently it's a fairly common issue. :(
Oh, and I forgot the ultimate option....new TV!

Lance builds a great trailer.....good quality trailer...note the hitch weight is 520# on the Lance and that's dry.  That being said..see the comment above

I can't see myself going anywhere I enjoy camping and really enjoy modifying my camper. I plan on going to Moab in October and ride all the trails. I'm close to Houston so it's always hot here AC power or Gen is a must. So camping for me is mostly in the fall and winter times. I do camp on the beach a lot and do some parks through out the year but I really like going up into the mountains and boon dock.

We still have our 21RBS.  Considered selling it this spring, since we have a challenge finding time for both it and our vaca home, but we decided to keep it.  Retirement is only about 6 or so years away and my time will free up substantially.  I don't poke my head in here all that often, but still around.

I've had my 21BHS just over a year now. I'm just a little late showing up to the party. Not going anywhere anytime soon... except maybe camping again.

I have been thinking about where I could go early next year when I get my new motorhome. One thing that might work for winter use is taking it to a ski resort either for daytime use or overnights.

We live a couple of hours from a few nice but small ski resorts: Catamont and Butternut in SW Massachusetts. In winters past we have driven up early in the morning after a nice snowfall and I ski for several hours while my wife Joan hangs out at the lodge. Afterwards we grab a late lunch somewhere nice. Well this year that won't work.

So I was thinking about driving up in the motorhome. I can go skiing with very little human interaction: buying my ski ticket at the outside kiosk ($20 for seniors) and lift attendants. Joan can hang out in the motorhome. I will park it at the far end of the parking lot where she can have a view of mother nature. For 4 hours or so with the gas furnace on I won't have to worry about freezing. But I will have to worry about it on the road at 60 mph. Will have to see how well the belly is enclosed to see if that will work.

Another possibility is taking the motorhome up to a ski resort that has camping spots open during the winter. Gunstock Mountain Resort in southern New Hampshire is one of these. They keep 4 camp spaces accessible from the road with hookups. We can buy takeout for dinner or fix it our self. Dining is the big problem with staying at a lodge in a ski area. We will not eat at a sit down restaurant while the Covid is raging so the MH solves that problem.

If I can resolve the over the road freezing risks I will have to deal with the overnight freezing risk as well. Maybe enclose the sides with a canvas screen to form an enclosed bubble underneath the coach which will trap warmish air. Will have to do some experiments first to see if that will protect it from freezing underneath.

In addition to these potential winter time ski related activities, there are a couple of public campgrounds, one in Pennsylvania and another in Virginia that are open year round. Again control of freezing up will be paramount to making this work for us.

Stay tuned.

Powder Hounds

Hi David!

Gota say we love your plan for skiing and camping. Since we are not able to winter in AZ this year we are getting ready for our ski season. We haven't booked anything yet for our powder getaways, probably see what the conditions will be like. Staying in Banff gives us perfect access to our ski hills, powered  year round sites with full showers and washrooms. It is going to be a very cold winter here in Alberta or so they say, 15 AMP is a definite requirement.

We installed a Wave 6 last year and use an electric heated mat to help dry our ski boots.

Have fun and enjoy!

DavidM

I have used a Wave 6 to heat up my boat in the morning, but I wouldn't sleep with it on.
