Karen and I are contemplating a trip soon over to Kitty Hawk or vicinity on the Outer Banks of NC. There are several campgrounds there.

Any recommendations or campgrounds to avoid?

Thanks in advance.

I have never been to any campgrounds on the OB's , but would love to get a report on your trip.

Last year we spent some time at the OBs at the Oregon Inlet campground.  Fairly nice campground with amenities (showers and restrooms) but was extremely cold and windy.  Beautiful area though with great access to the beaches.  Went out toward Ocracoke campground which was really beautiful.  Will be going back to camp at Ocracoke sometime later this year.  Both areas are beautiful, just be prepared for coolness and wind.

kitty Hawk in on my list of camping stops in August, no date set yet probably around late August around end of month.  Read several books on the Wright Brothers and Kitty Hawk is definitely windy which is why they choose that location to test their gliders!

I totally forgot about this thread!

We stayed 2 nights at the OBX campground earlier this week. It was $70/night, but it was one of the best maintained campgrounds we've stayed at, and highly recommend it.

No photos of the campground, but it was a nice bike ride over to the monument.

Karen was down with a stomach bug for those two days, so we definitely are planning a trip back.

When I have a chance I'll do a longer trip report.

As an aside, if you've never been over/through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, its frankly a modern engineering model. It's amazing what people can do when they set their minds to it!
