Cancelling Service Plans

Hello friends-

Has anyone here ever cancelled an extended service contract? We have an appointment to see our finance guy tomorrow to take care of this, but I'm not sure what to expect. I can imagine he's not too happy we want to cancel, so I'm expecting a hard sell, or even (gasp!) some deception.

It's a Camping World location. We purchased on March 11th, and although I do take some responsibility, I feel like we were duped into buying a package of plans. He never once claimed that they were optional. He showed us a list of payment options for our financing. We chose the lowest, but it still included a bunch of add-ons we don't need. I contacted the plans' administrators and they all tell me to contact the dealer. We have, and we are to meet him at 9 tomorrow morning.

I have thoroughly read the contracts and as far as I can see, we can return them for a full refund.

Anyone here have any experience with this kinda thing?

Thanks!

John

If the plan has it in writing that you can cancel for a refund, stick with it as you talk to the rep and you'll be ok. The full refund may have a time limit (possibly 30 days?). My only experience is with a Toyota extended service plan for a truck that I canceled within 30 days for a full refund and the finance person didn't care. I wondered if he made his money on the initial sale and subsequent cancellation didn't affect that commission? Anyway, go in expecting the hard sell, practice saying "no" over and over before you get there, and after potentially long discussions, the guy will wear out and give in. And report back on the outcome! Others will be interested in this and will be in a similar situation in the future. And, if you really want an extended service contract someday, by all means shop around; there are lots of options.

Thanks Merlin, your response is reassuring. I'm experiencing a bit of anxiety over this whole mess. Can't wait until it's all over and it's back to being all about the FUN.

I will definitely report back. It's the least I can do after all the benefits this forum's wisdom have afforded me.

I appreciate it.

We just got home from Camping World, and it was less painful than I had anticipated.

He had us sign a form for each of the packages we wanted to cancel. What bothered me a bit, though, was that we signed and dated the cancellation forms, but the rest of the details were yet to be filled in. He said his admin would do the rest and submit them. I asked him to please fax me copies of those forms once they are completed. He said that wouldn't be a problem.

So now, it's wait time. As far as I'm concerned, it's not over until the money is in the bank. He said funding takes 4-6 weeks typically.

As I said, not very painful, hardly any push back, but I trust dealerships like I'd trust Charlie Manson to babysit. i.e., NOT AT ALL. I always walk in the door expecting shady tactics.

We'll see. I'll update when and if something more happens.

Thanks!

Glad you got through it reasonably painlessly. I only have one data point in financing a new vehicle, but my experience was nothing like yours. Sure the finance guy told me about the add-ons, but did not push them. I just said no and moved on.

But it sounded like your guy obfuscated the add-ons with the basic financing and I find that dishonest at best, illegal at worst.

Good luck on getting your money.

Another update:

After a week without receiving the promised copies of the completed cancellation forms, I called them back.

I spoke to the person responsible for sending the forms to the plan administrators and she was very friendly and helpful and within another day I had my copies of the completed forms. $5000.00 will be credited to the loan as a principle payment.

I went in today and picked up my license plate. Hopefully it's a done deal at this point. I will post a final update (hopefully final) once the money actually shows up. I don't plan on going back for any service or warranty work. Hopefully I can fix whatever comes up myself, and if anything major, I'll contact Livin' Lite directly for advisement.

Thanks again-

John

I just want to get back to the excitement of finally getting out and camping. First trip booked for next month..
