Help needed. My entry door will not open. I unlocked the door (from the outside), pulled on the handle to open and the upper lock on the door popped out a bit but the door seems to still be locked and will not open. I am wondering if the mechanism broke completely. I am hoping someone can provide some insight before I call the locksmith. Thanks.
My door has two locks, if yours does make sure they are both unlocked.
There was a thread somewhere about door lock mechanisms that failed and could not be opened. Not sure if it was on this forum or the livinlite forum. Upshot is that some folks could not make their door work even from the inside and had to remove the handle to repair or replace. I vaguely recall that is was caused by an internal part that either broke or slipped out of place.
There is a screw inside that loosens up. As it does, you'll notice the red lock lever inside the door moves more easily and the detent you normally feel is no longer there. Eventually the screw falls out and the lock can't be unlocked. Fortunately for me I was able to fix mine before it totally fell out. I just tightened it and used some locktite.
The lock can be disassembled from the inside to tighten/replace the screws. I have no idea how to get it apart/unlocked from the outside once the screws fall out of the mechanism.
And fair warning, on my camper the bathroom door has a similar latch/lock.
Thanks for the replies. Looking for information on these locks revealed that they can be very problematic. I came across quite a few stories of multiple folks having very unpleasant experiences related to lock failures. I did have to get help from a locksmith. He too said that he has seen multiple problems. If you are on the inside with the right tools (or have a little person you can send through the hatch and is strong enough to lift the bed and climb into the camper) you can get the lock apart. If that is not the case and you are locked out and it is not just a cylinder issue, you will have to drill it out and replace the entire mechanism. I have now ordered an extra replacement to have on hand. I will also be keeping a few tools in the bathroom. Thanks for the "heads up" on that one Merlin.
