Title: Mattress Suggestions 21 RBS
Post by: JazzyPigsGA on June 21, 2017, 03:40:04 AM

We are thinking about upgrading our 2018 queen OEM bed to a ' real' bed. We sleep on a firm bed. Can we use a Serta or something like our bed? I question weight and off gassing. Thoughts? What have others done in the non RV mattress department? Thx

You can't use a regular fabric-based mattress on a non-breathable base like the aluminum in our campers. It will eventually get mildew and mold on the bottom. We bought our foam mattress on-line from Mattress Insiders. They have a large seiection of sizes and firmness for RVs, which tend to have odd sizing. Ours is extremely comfortable and is easily one of the best things about our camper. We aired it out for 3 days on our house porch after we opened it up to allow for initial off-gassing. It has no residual "foam" odor at all.

This is most definately not what you are looking for but...

I have a quicksilver so I couldnt go with a thick mattress because it wouldnt fold up.

I have a intex PureSpa inflatable hot tub and it is made with this tech they call durabeam or fibertech. Its tiny little threads that are threaded across the inside of the inflatable tub to keep it from flexing when pressure is applied like my 240lbs sitting on the edge. On top of that, my purespa sat on my back patio for 2 years through the arizona summers and winters before I moved and I never re-inflated it once. It really impressed me.

I was walking through Walmart before our last trip and I found an intex queen 13" thick air mattress with that same fiber tech webbing inside and decided to try it for $54. My wife was against it from the start and demanded a real mattress. This bed was perfect on our last trip. My wife would get out of bed and I couldnt even feel the mattress move. It was firm and supportive. Since I have been home I actually have been laying on my $6000 sleep number bed wishing I could sleep on my $54 intex bed again. Its very sad.

Here is my OEM "mattress" on top of my intex bed. By the way, the OEM mattress was used as a topper in the situation above.

Here is the mattress I bought. See the video for more detail on the fiber-tech construction.

That interesting I never considered that. We live in S. Ga so the heat would dry it but humidity might have the opposite effect.

I agree with using the Intex air mattress.  My wife and I use the Intex Jr Twin with fiber tech.  At 30 inches wide it works great in our 16 TBS and we both get  the individual firmness we like.

We had our mattress custom made here in Florida by the Original mattress factory.  We bought 2 sets; one complete set for home and one top mattress for our 21RBS.  They put it in our trailer and our house.  You can have them remove old mattress for an additional charge.  We love them!!!  Only down side was they are a heavy and the bed struts will not hold them up like the light OEM mattress

We bought custom mattresses from mattressinsider.com and they are great.  We had them do two twins and another two pieces that match up with having the center bed shelf on or off on our 16 TBS. Great campers but they come with a crappy mattress.

We had Original Mattress Factory make a queen size for our 21 BHS and it's been in the camper for past 2 years or more with no issues at all, which includes seasonal changes while camper is in storage lot. We sold the OEM mattress on craigs list.  The mattress is heavier than OEM foam but worth it in having comfortable bed. I haven't seen any signs of mold or smells from mattress, as the camper still has that original clean smell.  I'm going to check the underside of the mattress next time I go check on it as it's in storage lot. The camper inside gets pretty hot between camping stops when we are on the road,  I imagine everything probably dries out pretty good if an moisture is present. Only a few times have we seen any condensation in the camper around floor at the wall.  I installed the foam workout squares on the floor to adds some insulation for the floor.

We bought one of these for our 16TBS and I also put a small cushion top mattress pad on it. It was gassy for a while but that has finally dissipated. It is very comfortable and we actually look forward to crawling into bed at night. And the price was right!

FYI it's pretty easy to put different struts with more lift power under the beds.  I had the same issue, the swap out only takes a few minutes.

We need heavier duty has struts in ours as well. I've often wondered how hard it was to replace the gas struts under the bed. How do you extend them out so that they can be attached?

When you buy the struts they come extended. Just raise the bed, use a small screw driver to loosen the clips, and remove the old ones. Buy new struts the same length but with a higher force rating and clip them in. Simple operation.

Look at the Leesa, or Casper memory foam mattress... I have one on my bed at home and one in the camper. They work very well. If you need to trim them to fit, use an electric carving knife and they cut like a hot knife through butter!
