In our 21BHS it is great having all the storage under the lower bunk but it was a real pain to get in there. I added some gas struts and a hinge and now the access is easier than ever! I had to go with 4 sruts because 2 was not enough to lift the lid and mattress.
Nice job! We have a 21BHS as well and our problem isn't so much lifting the lid up, it's removing all of the stuff that we have stored up on top of the bunk first!
That lower bunk didn't come hinged? Our 2013 21BHS has a hinged lower bunk with gas struts.
No, ours did not come hinged with gas struts. Ours is a 2016 that was manufactured in November 2015.

Nope... ours is a 2018 and wasn't hinged. Funny, they probably save $20 in parts and a half hour of labor.

Wow, that's a poor decision. For what these cost, a small item like that becomes a glaring omission.
Any info on the struts and where you got them?
I bought 4 of these from Amazon

And this hinge from Amazon

And then used #10 screws 3/8" long. I drilled pilot holes in the cover first...
