Title: Crappy workmanship, how the heck to install license plate?
Post by: tbrady on April 04, 2017, 09:00:32 PM
So... I went to put the license plate on and found that they put the bracket about 2" above the taillight in a position where the license plate won't fit!  it looks like I'm going to have to move the bracket far enough to leave some exposed holes where the bracket currently is...

Any thoughts on how to make this better?  (maybe if I could get a small motorcycle license plate!)

without relocating the bracket, the only thing you can really do is shift the plate all the way to the right and drill new holes in the plate.

can still see the plate number btw  ;D

Turn the bracket upside down.  ;D Lights the back of the unit as well.

Apparently on the 2018 models they moved the taillights off of the bumper but forgot to move the bracket!  And thuddr, the license is almost impossible to read, what you see is the shading I added to  make it look like you can read it.  :o

What a hoot! I realize it's not funny to you, but it's a classic bungle. Common sense is so rare.

If it was mine, I'd remove the bracket, cut and tape off the wires, seal the screw holes, drill new screw holes, and refasten the bracket so the plate clears the taillight. No one will care that the plate is not lighted and the plate will cover the old screw holes. Then send your photo to LL so they can correct the problem.

Oops! A classic case of unintended consequences. Not sure if it's the designers not talking to the production shop or the assemblers not paying attention to anybody. Maybe just a bean counter's midnight inspiration. Depending on how the frame is presently mounted and wired it might be possible to extend the wires and remount slightly above.

I'm curious...

What possible harm can come from a license plate number being in a photo posted on the web?

Yeah, I'll post a pic once I fix it...

And Eddie, I'm kind of in your camp on exposing my license plate online.  I'm not that worried about it.  I guess someone could use that info to make some sort of accusation?  E.g. "Detective, I'm certain that the trailer that ran over me had WA state tags XXXXXXX".

Yeah, I'll post a pic once I fix it... we are leaving today for Utah so I'm just carrying the plate in the trailer for now.

The bad guys can determine who you are and where you live. That, along with announced travel plans like tbrady just did, gives them the info they need to visit your unguarded house  :( .

Crap...  I should know better.  However, we do have a fairly protective German Shepard staying behind and a house sitter (who happens to always carry) so hopefully things will be ok.

Unfortunately there are people and networks that monitor travel forums for just such information. But then, I'm paranoid  ;) .
