It would be interesting to know if you could downsize the cables by running higher voltage from end to end, and converting it at either end to 12v

Amazon replacement of your choice, less than $100. Well less.

Any single-din car stereo with bluetooth, USB, and DVD will do.

Probably not factory. Some folks objected to the radio glowing loud blue all night and put switches, or conceivably an inline fuse that was easier to find and pull than remembering which what which on the pdc.

For our part, we just removed the faceplate and left it off except for the rare times when we actually wanted the stereo.

Then again, it may be that they replaced the original radio and the inline fuse was part of the wiring that came with it.

Too hot and too cold all in the same weld. Impressive.

Is it possible by "12 volt AC breaker" he means "the AC breaker for the 12v converter" ?

That might make sense, as the source of the short could be somewhere between the converter and the battery.

They ran wires through holes drilled in the aluminum, with no reaming to remove burrs, or grommets to provide any cushion. Eventually those sharp edge cut into the insulation, and hot shorts to ground.

From professional experience with offshore manufacturing....

The Chinese will make anything you want, at whatever quality level you want. They will happily make crap, and happily make world class.

They will also happily charge you for world class and deliver crap if you let them. You MUST have an active presence in country and be conspicuously watching and holding them accountable to the specification. Do that, and you get exactly what you paid for. Don't, and all bets are off.

Taiwan is a bit more....scrupulous would be the word. They have a bit more of what in the US used to be called pride of workmanship.

The aluminum "welding" rods are actually brazing rods, used with MAPP gas torch. If you can solder, you can use them.

I no longer have the 14DBS so I can't check. The only thing I remember about the wheel wells is that they were not well sealed - road spray during a heavy rain could and would get inside from the wheel well seams.

I agree with the idea of constructing a supporting frame with aluminum stock instead of wood. This might be an excellent excuse to play with the aluminum "welding" ie. brazing/soldering rods from HFT and then mounted with self tapping screws.

Moving the batteries off the tongue directly over the axles would reduce the tongue weight measurable. Whether this would be desirable or undesirable would depend on what the current tongue weight and balance is.

Given the small volume of storage space in the 14DBS, in particular under the counters, I do have to wonder if this is the best use of the . I would be interested in knowing why the batteries can't live outside where their predecessors did.

Brilliant !

Our new TT has one of the big refrigerators with a separate freezer. To my surprise, these are not available as a 3-way, only Gas/AC. No 12v. Which means rolling down the road you either run it on propane, or leave it turned off and hope to get reconnected to shore power before the temp rises too much.

So that's something that no longer pulls from our battery (we wouldn't run 12v at destination anyway). Other than air conditioning, which we rarely use, our battery needs are pretty modest - most of our camping is near the ocean where we don't need air conditioning anyway.

When I do use a generator, I have an 800w unit what weighs less than 20#, and runs on 1# propane cylinders (7 hours at a time; you can get an external regulator to run off your big bottles). So that's putting out ~7 amps, roughly what you could plan on with a 100w solar briefcase assuming less than 100% best conditions for the whole time. It makes a quiet purring sound.

Charging from the tow vehicle would certainly fill our needs to keep charged in a pinch.
